If your favorite late-night show isn’t on this week, you’re not alone.
In the days leading up to July 4th, each of the traditional late-night talk shows has gone dark. That includes The Daily Show, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Late Night with Seth Meyers, and The Late Show with Stephen Colbert—all airing reruns or (in The Daily Show‘s case) preempted entirely.
It’s part of a long-standing tradition: the week of Independence Day has become an unofficial vacation window across the late-night landscape. Production halts let hosts and crews take time off during a ratings lull, with audiences distracted by travel, barbecues, and fireworks.
The Daily Show, which already took last week off, will be the first to return, with new episodes starting Monday, July 7. Jimmy Kimmel Live! is also set to resume that same night, with longtime friend of the show Anthony Anderson stepping in as guest host. Anderson has filled in during each of Kimmel’s previous summer breaks and will once again hold down the fort for four nights.
The rest of the field is settling in for a longer hiatus, with Fallon, Meyers, and Colbert all scheduled to return Monday, July 14.
Here at LateNighter, we’re following suit. We’ll jump in with any major breaking news as it happens, but otherwise our regularly scheduled programming resumes Monday, July 7.
Until then, enjoy the fireworks—and the repeats. (Complete rerun lineups here.)
