Last Week Tonight with John Oliver quietly acknowledged this weekend’s shooting at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner—while making clear its episode had been taped before it occurred.
Sunday night’s episode opened with a simple title card reading, “This episode was taped Saturday April 25, 2026”—a nod to the chaos that eruped at the Washington Hilton during the annual dinner attended by President Donald Trump Saturday night, hours after Last Week Tonight had wrapped.
Beyond that brief disclaimer, the HBO series appeared to air as planned. John Oliver’s opening news segment still took aim at Trump, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Kash Patel, and Trump’s Fed chair pick Kevin Walsh before pivoting to a main story focused on AI chatbots.
Saturday night’s shooting at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner quickly became the weekend’s biggest news story after gunfire erupted outside the ballroom at the Washington Hilton, where Trump, members of his cabinet, and hundreds of journalists were gathered for the annual event. Authorities said a suspect was taken into custody after opening fire near a security checkpoint, leaving one officer injured.
In the 24 hours since, the incident has dominated cable news coverage, front pages, and social media feeds, with reporting focused on the security breach, the suspect’s alleged motives, and the extraordinary fact that an attack unfolded at one of Washington’s highest-profile annual gatherings.
It’s not the first time Last Week Tonight has found itself blindsided by major breaking news because of its Saturday taping schedule.
The show most faced a similar issue last June when U.S. military strikes on Iran occurred shortly after the show had finished taping. At the time, the show acknowledged the development in a post to Bluesky, writing:
“Earlier today we taped tomorrow’s show, and we discussed the potential for the U.S. to bomb Iran. Since taping, the U.S. has carried out several bombings. We’ll have more to say in the future…”
The show ran into a similar problem a year earlier when then-President Joe Biden dropped out of the 2024 race on a Sunday afternoon.
At the time, Last Week Tonight joked on social media:
“‘Hey, let’s switch our taping day to Saturday, no big news ever happens on a Sunday afternoon.’—some idiots.”
Through its first six seasons, Last Week Tonight taped on Sundays. That changed during the COVID-era remote production period; the Saturday schedule has remained in place ever since.
