Late Night with Seth Meyers is a show without a showrunner for two weeks.
Seth Meyers addressed Shoemaker’s absence on Thursday night’s Corrections, explaining that Shoemaker was out recovering from surgery. “He claims his doctors told him he had to get it,” Meyers joked. “But would a doctor really tell you [that] you need Angelina Jolie lips?”
In reality, Shoemaker is recovering from knee replacement surgery. He had his left knee replaced in 2024, and finished the job over Late Night‘s recent two-week break.
Shoemaker will miss next week’s shows, too. Late Night then goes on another two week hiatus. Shoemaker is expected to be back in action when the show returns with new episodes Monday March 30th.
Shoemaker, or “Mikey the Shoe” as Meyers often refers to him on air, has been Late Night‘s EP and showrunner since Meyers took over the NBC franchise from Jimmy Fallon in 2014. He and Meyers first met on Saturday Night Live, where Shoemaker worked his way up the production ranks starting in 1986.
Corrections owes its very existence to Shoemaker. Meyers has said that at the outset his only goal with the online segment, which is shot without an audience present, was to amuse Shoemaker. To wit, Meyers can often be seen looking to his right during the segment, talking directly to his EP.
