Julia Sweeney Is Campaigning to Be Saturday Night Live’s Tim Walz

As Saturday Night Live fans continue to make their best guesses and suggestions for who should play vice presidential hopeful Tim Walz next season, one former cast member is throwing her hat in the ring.

Julia Sweeney took to X/Twitter earlier today to suggest herself for the role:

“Quite honestly I think I should be the one to play Walz on [SNL],” Sweeney wrote. She included a photo of herself that does indeed bear a slight resemblance to Walz, the Minnesota governor who presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Kamala Harris announced as her running mate on Tuesday morning.

Sweeney’s comment follows a day of internet speculation about who Saturday Night Live could enlist to play Walz, assuming the role doesn’t go to a Season 50 cast member. Last week, it was revealed that Maya Rudolph would reprise her frequent Kamala Harris impression on the show next season.

Sweeney was a cast member on SNL from 1990 through 1994, where she became best known for playing Pat, an androgynous character that Sweeney has recently spoken about coming to terms with and wanting to reinvent in a more positive light.

Playing Walz would mark Sweeney’s first time appearing on Saturday Night Live since she departed the cast 30 years ago.

Sweeney’s post generated a positive response from fans, and even some notable names. Comedian Patton Oswalt endorsed the idea with a repost, while MSNBC host Stephanie Ruhle told Sweeney, “Can I vote – YES on this!!!”

“Yes please,” one user replied to Sweeney’s post, adding an important question. “How is your Minnesota accent?”

“Needs work,” Sweeney said, “but I can get it in shape.”

Season 50 of Saturday Night Live premieres on September 28.
