The Daily Show will go live yet again following Tuesday night’s VP debate between J.D. Vance and Tim Walz, but Jon Stewart won’t be hosting this one. Instead, it will be Michael Kosta delivering the show’s immediate response to the first vice presidential debate of 2024 (he’ll also be behind the desk on Wednesday and Thursday).
While Stewart was expected to host the live episode, he’ll instead be behind the desk tonight for his regular Monday night gig. His guest will be author Ta-Nehisi Coates, whose new book The Message has been gaining attention largely for a story he tells about a trip to Israel-Palestine.
Stewart has typically hosted The Daily Show’s live event-viewing episodes since he assumed the role of weekly host earlier this year. While he typically hosts Monday nights, he switched up his schedule to host the Thursday-night post-debate episode in June, when Trump took on then-candidate Joe Biden. He did the same in August to cap off the show’s week spent at the Democratic National Convention. Earlier this month, he hosted the Tuesday-night live episode that followed Trump’s first debate with Kamala Harris—an episode that brought The Daily Show its biggest audience in seven years.
However, it’s not Stewart’s first time handing over the reins for a live episode. Back in July, contributor and frequent guest host Jordan Klepper hosted the live show that followed the finale of the Republican National Convention, while Stewart hosted the week’s first night from their New York City studio. Still, that lineup change was the result of the show having to scrap its plans at the last minute for a week of shows from Milwaukee following the first attempted assassination of Trump.
Kosta has done six multi-day stints as guest host this season, and also hosted one episode during the show’s week in Chicago for the DNC in August. He’s been a correspondent with The Daily Show since 2017.
Kosta’s guest tomorrow will be Paola Ramos, journalist and author of the book Defectors: The Rise of the Latino Far Right and What It Means for America.
