Jon Stewart to Host The Daily Show Tonight, Will Address Kimmel Controversy

In a last-minute shakeup, Jon Stewart will host The Daily Show tonight. Stewart, who normally anchors the Comedy Central show only on Mondays, was not scheduled to appear again until next week.

Stewart’s unscheduled return was prompted by the escalating fallout from Jimmy Kimmel’s remark in his Monday night monologue about “the MAGA gang” and its reaction to emerging details about Charlie Kirk’s alleged killer. ABC announced yesterday that Jimmy Kimmel Live! would go on an indefinite hiatus, sparking widespread debate over free speech, satire, and the political targeting of late-night television.

Stewart’s guest will be Maria Ressa, the 2021 Nobel Peace Prize laureate, CEO of Rappler, professor at Columbia University, and author of How to Stand Up to a Dictator. Ressa is internationally recognized for her work defending press freedom and combating disinformation, and her appearance is expected to frame the Kimmel situation within a broader conversation about media censorship, authoritarianism, and the global fight for democratic institutions.

Kimmel and Stewart are longtime friends and colleagues, who famously share a manager, James “Baby Doll” Dixon, with fellow late-night host (and Trump antogonist) Stephen Colbert.

It’s not clear when the decision was made for Stewart to host instead of Desi Lydic, who was previously announced as this week’s Tuesday-Thursday host. The show is set to tape in the next hour or so.
