John Higgins Lands First Post-SNL Role in Netflix Comedy Bad Day

Just three weeks after leaving Saturday Night Live, John Higgins has already lined up his next project.

The Please Don’t Destroy member will star in the upcoming Netflix comedy Bad Day.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Higgins joins a cast that includes Cameron Diaz, Ed O’Neill, and Danielle Brooks. The film also reunites him with fellow SNL alum Jake Szymanski, who is set to direct.

Written by Office Christmas Party screenwriter Laura Solon, Bad Day follows “a single mom fighting to keep one little promise to her daughter on the absolute worst day of her life,” per THR. Higgins will play an NYPD officer working with his partner (Brooks) to track her down.

When he announced his SNL exit earlier this month, Higgins teased that new on-screen opportunities were ahead, saying he was “excited to pursue acting opportunities that I’ll announce soon.”

Bad Day is the first of those—but not Higgins’ first time on the big screen. He co-wrote and starred in Please Don’t Destroy: The Treasure of Foggy Mountain with troupe partners Martin Herlihy and Ben Marshall, appeared in Happy Gilmore 2, and headlined the golf comedy The Country Club in 2023.

Szymanski brings his own SNL pedigree, having directed sketches like “Psychic Awards” and “Underground Festival,” along with Digital Shorts including “Tennis Balls” and “That’s When You Break.” More recently, he directed the Peabody Award-winning Jury Duty, as well as Andy Samberg’s HBO mockumentaries 7 Days in Hell and Tour de Pharmacy.

Higgins confirmed the casting on Instagram with a short caption: “Gonna be fun.”
