Curb Your Enthusiasm may be over, but a new project from Jimmy Kimmel just might fill the void.
The Jimmy Kimmel Live! host’s production company, Kimmelot, is teaming up with Kapital Entertainment and Fox Entertainment Studios for a new comedy series starring rock ‘n’ roll legend Huey Lewis. Per Deadline, Whatever Happened to Huey Lewis will follow a fictionalized version of Lewis as he learns to navigate a “hilarious new phase” of life after losing his hearing.
The half-hour, single-camera series—which is currently in development at Fox—is written and executive produced by Kirker Butler (Only Murders In the Building). It’s slated to be shot mockumentary-style in a similar fashion to HBO’s Curb Your Enthusiasm.
Lewis publicly revealed in 2020 that he’d suffered hearing loss as a result of Ménière’s disease, a chronic inner ear disorder. “It was devastating at first,” the musician told Page Six in 2023. “I pretty much laid in bed for six months. I worried, I panicked. I was in a real depression. I pretty much stayed in bed, but I have two great kids and they wouldn’t stand for it basically. And I slowly improved.”
Kimmel and Lewis go way back as longtime friends and fly-fishing buddies. Lewis reprised his Back to the Future cameo for Jimmy Kimmel Live! in 2015, appearing in a skit that also featured Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd.
Lewis also guested on Jimmy Kimmel Live! in March, where he discussed his recent Broadway show, Heart Of Rock And Roll; the Netflix documentary The Greatest Night in Pop; and never recording a song that Bob Dylan wrote specifically for him.
Whatever Happened to Huey Lewis is the second co-production between Kimmelot and Kapital. The companies are currently collaborating on The Home, and upcoming comedy series. Additionally, Kimmelot is behind the Emmy-winning Live In Front of a Studio Audience franchise.
