Heated Rivalry star Hudson Williams on Wednesday night found himself having to referee a fight between Tonight Show host Jimmy Fallon and The Roots’ Tariq.
Midway through his opening monologue, Fallon threw to Tariq (aka Black Thought) to get his take on a controversial Starbucks menu change that’s making headlines.
When Tariq likened Starbucks’ “all over the place” strategy to Heated Rivalry‘s Shane and his approach to love, Fallon took faux offense—and in doing so set in motion an increasingly escalating, clearly-written-by-book fans, two-minute back-and-forth about the buzzy Canadian TV series’ main characters, pro hockey rivals/secret lovers, Shane and Ilya.
Just as Tariq worked himself into a furious lather, Williams (who plays Shane on Heated Rivalry) emerged from the wings to simmer him and Fallon down, assuring the men, “You’re both right.”

Ahead of The Tonight Show‘s Wednesday afternoon taping, Williams was greeted by throngs of fans outside 30 Rock. His visit marked the first late-night appearance for any lead cast member from Heated Rivalry, which debuted in late November on Canada’s Crave and streamed Stateside day-and-date on HBO Max.
The day after Williams’ Tonight Show booking was announced, NBC’s Late Night with Seth Meyers swooped in to schedule his scene partner, Connor Storrie (aka Ilya), for a Monday, January 12, appearance.
As Heated Rivalry‘s freshman run ignited much online discourse and countless think pieces on the popularity of the drama about two rival pro hockey players who engage in a secret romance, the Canadian production emerged as Crave’s No. 1 original series debut on record, increasing its viewership by nearly 400% since the premiere.
Stateside, it stands as HBO Max’s “top-rated non-animated acquired series” since the service launched in 2020, and was in the Top 5 among all scripted debuts on HBO Max in 2025—though it has yet to crack Nielsen’s U.S. streaming Top 10, after two weeks of eligibility.
Hey Late Nighter, don’t you think it’s a bit unfair you haven’t elaborated on the actual interview w/Hudson? Especially with that headline pic used on this post w/o the context??? I’m just sayin’ 🤭
