Somehow George Clooney, who’s been in the public eye for over thirty years (and has appeared on countless talk shows), hasn’t once visited NBC’s Late Night franchise—not through the tenures of Conan O’Brien, Jimmy Fallon, or Seth Meyers.
Meyers was set to break that streak when it was announced last week that Clooney would be guesting on Late Night this Monday night, but it turns out he won’t be appearing tonight after all.
His appearance was all systems go as of last Thursday, but by mid-day Friday, Clooney was off the show’s guest list.
Clooney is currently appearing on Broadway, playing Edward R Murrow in a staged adaptation of his 2005 film Good Night and Good Luck. Late last week he earned a Tony nomination for the role, which marked his Broadway debut. (If he wins he’ll be one Grammy win away from an EGOT.)
It’s not clear what prompted the actor’s cancellation, but there’s been some speculation that Clooney, who appeared to be in good health on stage at The Winter Garden Theater this weekend (and was photographed playing softball in Central Park late last week), might be using the time between the end of this week’s Sunday matinee and the show’s Tuesday night performance to visit his wife overseas.
Amal Clooney was among a handful of top lawyers recently warned by British authorities that the Trump Administration might soon bar them from entering the United States for providing advice to the International Criminal Court in its war crimes case against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant.
Replacing Clooney as lead guest on Late Night tonight will be longtime Meyers pal John Oliver. Saturday Night Live cast member Chloe Fineman (who stars in the new feature film Summer of 69) is also set to appear on tonight’s show.
