First on LateNighter: Two late-night shows will be burning the midnight oil again next Tuesday.
Both The Daily Show and The Late Show with Stephen Colbert will be airing live episodes on the east coast after the vice presidential debate on Tuesday, October 1, 2024.
Both shows did the same thing earlier this month following ABC’s presidential debate between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris—and both shows were handsomely rewarded for their efforts. Colbert doubled his audience week-over-week among the key demographic of adults 18-49, while a special Jon Stewart-hosted Tuesday episode of The Daily Show scored the show’s highest ratings since 2017.
Stewart is expected to anchor the show’s live vice presidential debate coverage next week.
Historically, vice presidential debates haven’t usually commanded the same level of interest as presidential debates. But next week’s match-up could buck that trend.
Part of that has to do with the candidates set to face off: Ohio senator J.D. Vance, the one-time Never-Trumper who has become the former president’s staunchest defender, and Minnesota governor Tim Walz, who rose to national prominence after dubbing Vance and Trump “just weird.”
Adding to the intrigue is the likelihood that the VP debate will be the last time we see any of the candidates in the same room this election cycle.
Guests have yet to be announced for either show.
