That’s a wrap on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert‘s tenth season.
Thursday night’s show was the show’s last fresh episode until Tuesday September 2, when the show will kick off its final season. CBS will be airing reruns of the show until then.
As it happens, The Late Show‘s final episode of the season happened to fall on the same day that the merger between Paramount and Skydance closed. (As we’ve reported, execs were forced to address Colbert’s cancelation at a press conference Thursday marking the completion of the merger.)
It remains to be seen how much will have changed within the company when The Late Show returns in September. Skydance has denied playing a role in Colbert’s cancellation, which CBS has said was made for “purely financial” seasons
With Colbert set to take his final bow as Late Show host in May, the coming season will be shorter than usual, but it won’t be its shortest. The show’s eighth season was cut short by the WGA strike, which began on May 2, 2023.
As we’ve previously reported, The Daily Show is taking a five-week break this summer, which began late last week. The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and Late Night with Seth Meyers will still be producing new episodes next week before heading out on a two-week break themselves starting next Friday, August 15.
Jimmy Kimmel Live!, meanwhile, is set to begin its last two week stretch of summer guest hosts next week, with Nicole Byer filling in for Jimmy Kimmel. Kimmel himself returns from his annual summer vacation the same night as Colbert: Tuesday, September 2.
What’s with Colbert doing a Nazi salute in that pic?
I guess Mamdani’s appearance with him rubbed off.
Dude, it’s just a pic of him waving goodbye cuz the show’s on vacation
Not everything is deep or has to be complicated with politics
That being said, I’m bummed that next month will be the last season, but at least every late night host will come back stronger after a summer rest
You know that’s not a Nazi salute!
You’re just being your usual obnoxious retarded self, bitchole!
Dude, calm down its just a comment its not that serious. You have anger issues.
So you demand I calm down for telling a right wing troll to shut his fucking hole up for spreading its usual garbage around?
How bout I unload all my “anger issues” on your smug ugly face with my boots, bitch? Maybe then that’ll teach you not to stick your fucking nose into places it doesn’t belong!
The show just returned from a two week vacation and produced two or three weeks of new shows then is off for another three. Between commercials and reruns, this is not good for Late Night Television.
Good riddance to them all. None of them are funny. They just talk politics which is majorly boring, id rather see real interviews if they are not going to do real comedy. SNL NEEDS CANCELLED too . It hasnt been funny since the 80’s. . But Hollywood cant think outside the box. Everyone is afraid to be original, the nepo babies make saying no hard to third remakes. The movies are just new versions of old movies becuase they are all yes men looking for compliments on reboots and recyled ideas. Bring out new hosts . Stop hogging good time slots with mundane boring crap, mix it up . Try putting kelly clarkson at night. Or drew barrymore. Put someone really young in the 4 pm slots for teens to twenty somethings. Be original . We are sick of the same old same old formula of we have always done it this way. we dont need things spelled out to us in movies mr director. We arent stupid and you arent that smart .
Oh yes you are fucking stupid, Candy ass, you bitchole! Your whinny posts here are exhibit A!
So, what I’m getting from this long, emotionally unhinged tangent is, you want the entire concept of television to die since it isn’t the way YOU liked it since the 80s. This is bad faith criticism from someone who clearly watches the daytime portion of television.
Also, did you purposely leave out Fallon, who tried to stay apolitical til he needed to?
I do not agree with Ms. Candy Girl here, but Fallon was probably left out because he is so unfunny he transcends boring and mundane.
Candy,
I think once you mature a little bit (probably alot) you will understand that everything doesn’t revolve around your ideas and thoughts. So if you want prime time tv to have entertainment geared towards teenagers and 20somethings, quit sucking your thumb, change your diaper, and turn on Cartoon Network to get your jollies. When you grow up, you will understand why people enjoy the way things currently are. Bitch. Sounds like you’re sick and need a dose of dickinsider.
I would just like to say, Jed and everyone involved with this online operation, I’m VERY sorry for the current and incoming comments barraging the downfall of late night in your articles and posts; or just downright inappropriate statements from certain commenters (😒🦀)~
I’ve been a huge late night follower since 2012 so seeing this kind of new late night war against the current political temperature, the corporate capitulators and the online algorithm has me lamenting on the days when late night can just coexist within the cultural spectrum.
And now… there’s this defeatist, tribalism mindset that is festering on this site.
Now I must admit that while I am frustrated that a lot of late night shows are taking or will take vacations, it really shows the pressure all parties are feeling against the current TikTok, streamer competition; while I don’t want these innovations to completely go away, it’s very revealing how late night collectively needs a literal break while streamers and independent networks are able to keep moving, partially due to needing less personnel and production
However, I really hope once EVERYONE, hosts and staff alike, return from vacation, they’re able to get back on their feet and prove this time around that late night is still a lauded institution that can’t be ignored~
Well said my friend. Indeed everyone needs a break sometimes, and with the exception of Jaw Leno, every late night talk show since The Tonight Show starring Johnny Carson has taken a long hiatus in some way, shape, or form.
And indeed, the current late night landscape might seem dull, repetitive, boring, or dare I say, but sometimes, unfunny, and with all of our current forms of entertainment nowadays seemingly drowning out the institution of late night tv, and with the cancellation of one of the biggest names in the game might make late night enthusiasts like you and I weary of what the future has in store, by I believe there’s still hope in the horizon. I believe that one day something, or someone. will come along and make late night TV an American cultural institution once again.
I love Colbert but a little ticked off that the show is not on much of the time… too much…. I guess J Fallon is going to start getting my viewing time.
I wouldn’t do that if I were you. Jimmy Fallon is literally the unfunniest dude to ever grace Late Night TV. Go give the Kimmel guest hosts some love.
OH !! NO! NEED TO SEE YOU EVERY NIGHT !! THE ONLY REALLY GREAT LATE NIGHT SHOW LEFT !!!!
All that convoluted stuff in the last two paragraphs could have been summarized by saying, “They will all be back at the beginning of September. Colbert and Kimmel return on Tuesday, September 2nd.”
