Bowen Yang Won’t Reveal the SNL Host Who Made Multiple Staffers Cry—But the Internet Has Ideas

Bowen Yang says one poorly behaved Saturday Night Live host brought several cast members to tears, and now fans are wondering who the culprit might be.

Yang revealed the anecdote to Andy Cohen on Sunday’s episode of Watch What Happens Live, where Yang appeared as a guest alongside his Las Culturistas podcast co-host Matt Rogers.

“Without naming names, what’s the worst SNL host behavior you’ve witnessed during your time on the show?,” Cohen asked Yang during a game of “Truth or Kink.” Yang was quick to answer (rather than trigger Rogers’ vibrating underwear, as the game’s rules dictated).

“This man—this person—this host made multiple cast members cry on Wednesday before the table read,” Yang revealed, “because he hated the ideas.”

While Yang didn’t elaborate, his answer has sparked furious speculation among SNL fans.

Among the most common guesses on the Live from New York subreddit are Woody Harrelson, Bill Burr, Dave Chappelle, and Eddie Murphy.

Yang first joined the cast of Saturday Night Live in 2019, but he worked on the show as a writer for a year prior to that. Working off of this timeframe and Yang’s apparent slip that the host was a man, fans have been able to narrow the answer down just a bit.

“It would def have to be someone established to pull that,” one commenter pointed out.

“I also believe the SNL cast and crew would be upset if comedy legend Eddie Murphy didn’t like the ideas,” opined another user.

During Chappelle’s episode earlier this year, some saw Yang’s positioning on the stage during the goodnights as an attempt to create distance between himself and the controversial comic, who has elicited criticism over transphobic jokes in recent years.

Also repeatedly guessed was Elon Musk, whose hosting stint in 2021 was met with some indirect criticism from SNL cast members on social media, including Yang.

Here’s a list of every male who has hosted the show since Yang joined as a writer (with repeat hosts removed).
