What do you do when it’s been more than a decade since you left Saturday Night Live, but there’s a news story you want to riff on? If you’re Andy Samberg, the answer is simple: hijack your segment on Late Night with Seth Meyers.
Samberg did exactly that on Wednesday night while chatting with Meyers, catching the host by surprise after he began talking about the podcast they work on together.
“Seth? I love the ‘cast, but I’m gonna hijack this real quick,” he told Meyers. “You remember when we were on SNL, and I would sometimes come to your office because I saw a story that I thought would make a funny ‘Weekend Update’ feature?”
Samberg went on to pitch the story of the French pole vaulter whose… well-endowed nether regions prevented him from clearing the bar at this summer’s Olympics.
Meyers agreed the story would’ve been a good one.
“Should we do it now though?,” Samberg interjected. “Wally, get the cards!”
To Meyers’ surprise, Samberg exited the stage. He re-entered in a French-inspired striped shirt and beret, doing his best Parisian impression as Meyers read his lines off a surprise set of cue cards.
“Please welcome the French pole vaulter who knocked the bar down with his giant dong,” Meyers read.
What followed was a classic Samberg bit, heavy on dong jokes.
It’s not surprising that Samberg would commandeer a segment intended to promote The Lonely Island and Seth Meyers Podcast. The actor’s open disdain for the podcast medium has become a running joke on their show. On Wednesday, Meyers introduced Samberg as “an Emmy- and Golden Globe-winning actor, comedian, and reluctant podcaster.” And it’s not the first time his contempt for the pod has been mentioned on Late Night.
“I don’t like [podcasts], and I don’t think they’re good,” Samberg told Meyers during a previous appearance. “And as it’s gone on, that has not changed.”
