David Letterman and Matt Damon Were Extras on Sunday Night’s Gilded Age

As Vulture’s Alex Zalben writes, the duo filmed their blink-and-you’ll-miss-it cameo in May as part of Damon’s upcoming appearance on Letterman’s My Next Guest Needs No Introduction.

The six-second appearance comes just over eight minutes into the Season 4 premiere, with Letterman and Damon silently crossing the street outside George Russell’s home.

The Vulture piece eveals that the cameo fulfilled a nearly 50-year ambition for Letterman, who became enamored with the idea of slipping anonymously into the background of a movie or TV show after spotting his friend Gary Mule Deer as an extra in Annie Hall back in 1977.

Zalben reports that Damon was game when the My Next Guest team pitched the idea, and The Gilded Age eventually agreed to make it happen. Both men went through costume fittings, with Damon getting period-appropriate facial hair and Letterman supplying his own bowler hat. Despite all that effort, HBO confirmed to Vulture that neither received an onscreen credit.

Damon is set to appear in Season 7 of My Next Guest Needs No Introduction alongside Julia Roberts, Jimmy Kimmel, and Alex Honnold. Netflix previously announced that the new season would premiere later this year, but has not yet revealed an xact release date.
