Will Ferrell, Molly Shannon Set SNL Reunion in Netflix Golf Series

Two of Saturday Night Live’s most fondly remembered stars are reuniting on Netflix in a new series. Molly Shannon has signed on to co-star in Will Ferrell’s upcoming comedy series about a professional golfer.

Netflix is remaining mum on the details, but word is that Ferrell will star as a fictional golf legend in the show, which has been given a 10-episode order. Per Deadline, Ferrell’s character goes by the name of Lonnie “The Hawk” Hawkins, and Shannon will play his “foul-mouthed ex-wife Stacy.”

Golf will mark Ferrell’s first starring role in a comedy television series since SNL. He made his first return to TV with the Apple TV+ dramatic miniseries The Shrink Next Door in 2021.

The series was first revealed last year as a project set to star Ferrell and comedian Ramy Youssef. At the time, the project was co-created by Ferrell, Youssef, and Josh Rabinowitz. Youssef and Rabinowitz have since exited the series due to creative differences, with the project undergoing some major changes, and paving the way for Shannon to come on board.

Shannon, of course, was a cast member on SNL from 1995 to 2001. For most of that run, she was a repertory player alongside Ferrell, who stuck it out one more year before departing the show. The duo appeared in 194 sketches together during that time, as well as two SNL spinoff films: 1998’s A Night at the Roxbury and 1999’s Superstar.

Ferrell and Shannon have continued to collaborate in the years after SNL, including several appearances as broadcasters Cord Hosenbeck and Tish Cattigan to cover events like the royal wedding and the Rose Parade. They also appeared together in Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby and Ferrell’s recent documentary Will & Harper.

Harper Steele, the former SNL head writer who appeared in Will & Harper with Ferrell, is among the executive producers for the project, as are Chris Henchy, David Gordon Green, and Andrew Guest. The series hails from Ferrell’s Gloria Sanchez Productions, and Rian Johnson and Ram Bergman’s T-Street.
