Saturday Night Live is famously competitive—and that apparently extends to the world of LEGO. The SNL LEGO set concept we highlighted earlier this year now has some competition, as another fan’s take on Studio 8H is gaining traction on LEGO’s concept submission platform.
LEGO Ideas, the site where users pitch potential new sets to be voted on—and possibly turned into official products—now features two designs celebrating television’s longest-running (and most merchandised) sketch show.
Titled “Live From New York, It’s Saturday Night!,” the latest submission comes from LEGO Ideas user IAssembleMastiffs and marks the second Saturday Night Live-themed build currently vying for support.
The earlier concept, designed by Jon Sosis of the LEGO-centric YouTube series Building Friendships, remains in the running. That design, however, has something the newer entry doesn’t: involvement from a Not Ready For Primetime Player. As we reported earlier this year, the Building Friendships set was created in collaboration with SNL alum Bobby Moynihan.
Each model presents a unique vision of Studio 8H. The Building Friendships version features not just the iconic home base, but also mini-sets from some of SNL’s most popular sketches, plus studio cameras for an authentic behind-the-scenes vibe.
Meanwhile, IAssembleMastiffs’ design zeroes in on a detailed rendering of the Grand Central Station-inspired home base that’s anchored SNL since the early 2000s.
The newer design also includes seven LEGO minifigures representing the original 1975 cast. At the base of the stage? The show’s legendary opening line: “Live from New York, it’s Saturday Night!”
Another clever detail, according to the creator: “A detachable staircase can be used to pose your minifigures as in the famous cast photo taken on opening night.”
The 1,835-piece set even includes glow-in-the-dark elements to simulate studio lighting.
Of course, neither set is guaranteed to reach production. LEGO Ideas submissions must pass several voting milestones to stay active. Once a project hits 10,000 votes, it moves into official review by LEGO. If selected, the original designer receives a 1% royalty on all sales.
Since LateNighter’s last update, Moynihan and Sosis’ build has more than doubled its support and now boasts 610 votes—with over 230 days remaining to hit the next milestone of 1,000. The newer entry isn’t far behind, with nearly 350 votes and 275 days left to reach the same benchmark.
Fans can support either—or both—SNL LEGO concepts on the LEGO Ideas site: Moynihan and Building Friendships’ build, or IAssembleMastiffs’ version.
