It seems not even former late-night talk show hosts can escape Donald Trump’s wrath.
The president lashed out at David Letterman Friday evening on Truth Social, writing of the former Late Show host, “Whatever happened to the very highly overrated David Letterman, whose ratings were never very good, either. He looks like hell, but at least he knew when to quit. LOSER!!!”
Letterman and Trump, of course, go way back. The real estate developer turned reality TV star appeared on Letterman’s shows over 30 times, long before politics soured the relationship. By 2011, Letterman was already calling Trump’s attacks on Barack Obama racist, and since Trump’s election he has continued to mock him.
Trump’s post appears to be a response to Letterman’s appearance Thursday at The Atlantic Festival, where he criticized the cancellation of Stephen Colbert and suspension of Jimmy Kimmel and blasted what he described as “managed media.” “They took care of Colbert—that was rude, that was inexcusable,” Letterman said, adding that “you can’t go around firing somebody because you’re fearful or trying to suck up to an authoritarian criminal administration in the Oval Office.”
He also took aim at the FCC, joking that commissioner Brendan Carr sounded like “a Mario Puzo character,” and contrasted today’s climate with past presidents. “Not once were we squeezed by any governmental agency,” he said. “The institution of the President ought to be bigger than a guy doing a talk show.”
Letterman retired from CBS in 2015 after more than three decades in late night, joking Thursday, “Ten years ago I was smart enough to cancel myself.”
