The Daily Show’s Ronny Chieng Joins King of the Hill Reboot

It’s official: the long-awaited new season of King of the Hill will feature the voice of Ronny Chieng in a recasting of a fan-favorite character.

Chieng will take over the role of Kahn Souphanousinphone, previously voiced by actor Toby Huss. A recurring neighbor of the Hill family, Kahn is a Laotian man whose arrival in the neighborhood initially causes some culture shock for Hank Hill.

The Daily Show correspondent’s casting was confirmed alongside a newly released extended trailer for the Hulu revival of the animated series, which originally aired on Fox from 1997 to 2009.

This isn’t Chieng’s first foray into voice work. He’s had recurring roles on animated series including Mulligan, Interior Chinatown, and the English dub of Scissor Seven, and he lent his voice to the film Kung Fu Panda 4. His voice credits also include appearances on Krapopolis, Grimsburg, Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai, and Love, Death & Robots.

Chieng actually let the casting news slip several months ago on Ari Shaffir’s podcast, You Be Trippin’, though the reveal largely flew under the radar. At the time, Chieng explained that the recasting was intended to ensure the character of Kahn would be voiced by an Asian actor. Huss, who voiced the character from 1997 to 2010, is white.

Huss will still appear in the King of the Hill revival, taking over the role of Dale Gribble midway through the new season. The change comes following the 2023 death of Johnny Hardwick, who originated the role.

Chieng joined The Daily Show as a correspondent in 2015 and has shared Tuesday–Thursday hosting duties with fellow correspondents Desi Lydic, Michael Kosta, and Jordan Klepper since Jon Stewart’s return in 2024.

King of the Hill was created by Mike Judge and Greg Daniels, who return as executive producers for the new season.

The show’s 10-episode season premieres on Hulu on Monday, August 4.
