The Daily Show Looks to Have Election Night All to Itself

With election results coverage planned for each of the broadcast networks the night of November 5th, it’s looking like Comedy Central’s The Daily Show will be the only traditional late night show airing a new episode Election Night.

Although Stephen Colbert took his Late Show to corporate sibling Showtime for live presidential election night episodes in 2016 and 2020, the show has no such plans for 2024.

Not that we can blame them. Barring a landslide victory for either candidate, all indications are that we’re not likely to have an election result Tuesday night—and perhaps not until days later.

Of course, none of this is unfamiliar territory for The Daily Show, which currently plans to air live the night of November 5th.

The Daily Show‘s live election night episodes go back to the 2000 election, which—as students of history may recall—wasn’t decided until over a month later. Manning the desk back then was Jon Stewart, who most likely will be back in the anchor chair for this year’s coverage.

Unlike 2000, this time Stewart and team will be prepared for a no-resolution outcome. Which is, after all, a story unto itself—as is the media’s coverage of it. All of which is to say The Daily Show should have plenty to say when it goes live this Election Night, and—judging from the ratings it received the last time the show had a huge political story all to itself—it should have a large audience eager to tune in.
