Stephen Colbert knows exactly who America’s next veep should be.
There’s been a lot of speculation over who Kamala Harris—who became the presumptive Democratic nominee for president following Joe Biden’s historic decision to withdraw from the 2024 presidential election—might choose as her running mate. Naturally, however, Colbert has already chimed in with his own Twist-ed suggestion: Glen Powell.
“Hear me out, no more ideas, this is it: Glen Powell becomes Harris’s running mate,” Colbert proposed during Wednesday night’s episode of The Late Show. “I guarantee he will attract suburban women.”
Powell, who leads the summer blockbuster hit Twisters alongside Daisy Edgar-Jones, has become something of an internet boyfriend. On top of playing a snarky tornado chaser, the 35-year-old star has garnered attention for his starring roles in films like Top Gun: Maverick, Anyone But You, and Hit Man.
“I already have his slogan: ‘Yes, We Glen,’” Colbert added. “Four more abs! Four more abs!”
Colbert also took a beat to acknowledge that Harris has already raised more than $100 million ahead of her campaign’s first rally in Wisconsin on Tuesday. “That means that Kamala Harris had a bigger opening weekend than Twisters,” he said.
While The Late Show host’s VP suggestion is clearly in jest, it feels representative of the considerable bump in enthusiasm amongst the Democratic party (or “vibe shift” as many on social media succinctly put it) since Harris took the reins.
“I’m a little worried, because since Sunday afternoon, I haven’t been that worried, and that is deeply troubling,” Colbert joked. “I personally blame our next president, Kamala Harris.”
Harris is expected to declare her running mate in the next couple of weeks. Per CNN, the goal is to make an announcement by August 7, just ahead of the Democratic National Convention, which kicks off in Chicago on August 19.
Currently, some of the top contenders for vice president reportedly include North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper, Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, and Arizona Sen. Mark Kelly. But if Colbert has anything to say about it, Powell will outshine them all.
