First on LateNighter: Stephen Colbert is set to air another live edition of The Late Show following Donald Trump’s address to a joint session of the United States Congress Tuesday March 4th , 2025, and his guest is almost sure to make headlines.
At tonight’s Late Show taping, Colbert revealed that Former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg will be making his first television appearance since leaving office in January.
Though not officially a “State of the Union” address, since Trump just took office in January, the speech will serve the same purpose, and will be followed by a Democratic response, which will be delivered by Lateefah Simon, the rising star U.S. representative from California who is serving her first term in office.
Colbert has produced over 50 live episodes of The Late Show since taking the reins from David Letterman in 2015. Most of the show’s live episodes have followed major live political events, including presidential debates, party conventions, and The State of the Union.
Buttigieg’s last appearance on The Late Show, in fact, came during another live broadcast last summer, while Colbert and team were in Chicago for a week of shows that coincided with the Democratic National Convention.
The show has yet to reveal who else–if anyone–will appear on next Tuesday’s show.

The Stephen Colbert helps make the news a little more bearable. It’s good to be able to laugh instead of crying at some of the things that are happening!
I’m confused by the SATU acronym. Shouldn’t it be SOTU? Or am I missing a joke.
Marvin, I wish it were a joke. just incompetence. fixed. Thanks for pointing this out
