Stephen Colbert Begins Summer Break—Here’s What’s Still New in Late Night Tonight

If anything major breaks today—politically, culturally, or otherwise—only two late-night shows will be in a position to crack wise about it.

NBC’s Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live!—guest-hosted this week by Andor star Diego Luna—are the only netwok late-night talk shows taping new episodes this afternoon. The rest of the field is already winding down ahead of next week’s extended July 4th hiatus.

Seth Meyers pre-taped Thursday’s episode of Late Night on Wednesday. The Late Show with Stephen Colbert is taking the night off entirely. And Comedy Central’s The Daily Show wrapped up its most recent stretch of episodes last week.

That means Fallon and Luna will have the final word on the day’s news before the entire late-night landscape goes dark for the holiday.

The summer slow-down continues into next week, with all five major late-night shows—The Daily Show, Kimmel, Fallon, Meyers, and Colbert—off through at least the first week of July. TDS and Jimmy Kimmel Live! are scheduled to return Monday, July 7. Fallon, Meyers, and Colbert will remain on break until Monday, July 14.

Tonight’s final fresh lineups before the break include:

  • Jimmy Fallon welcomes The Bear star Jeremy Allen White and musical guest Karol G.
  • Jimmy Kimmel Live! features Emma Stone, Heidi Klum, and activist Dolores Huerta, with Diego Luna continuing his guest-hosting duties.
  • Seth Meyers’ pre-taped episode features Mariska Hargitay, journalist Jacob Soboroff, and comedian Mike Drucker.

In the meantime, here’s hoping the news cycle does us all a favor—and takes a vacation, too.

I have long thought that the late night shows should work together, like they did during the writers’ strike, so that one show, at least, is live during holiday breaks. It is a real hardship for those of us who love a new late night show every weeknight!

Haven’t they done enough damage already, licking Bernie the Bum’s unwiped taint at the expense of the Democratic Party?
