SNL writing partners Mikey Day and Streeter Seidell have joined forces on a unexpected new project: they’ve co-written an in-the-works live-action/CGI Rugrats movie.
No, really—this is not an SNL sketch. Deadline reports that the upcoming film, based on the beloved 1990s Nickelodeon cartoon, is in the works at Paramount. Tony-nominated producer/director Jason Moore is signed on to direct.
Moore’s work includes Avenue Q, Pitch Perfect, and Shotgun Wedding. He also directed the 2015 comedy flick Sisters, starring Amy Poehler, Tina Fey, and Maya Rudolph.
Details about the new movie’s plot and casting are scarce, but original series creators Arlene Klasky and Gábor Csupó are set to co-produce alongside Karen Rosenfelt. The Nickelodeon cartoon, which premiered in 1991, centered on a group of toddlers and their wacky day-to-day adventures.
Over the years, Rugrats has spawned three animated theatrical films, multiple spin-offs (including All Grown Up!), and several direct-to-video specials. Paramount also rebooted the series in 2021.
This isn’t the first time Day and Seidell have collaborated outside of SNL. They co-wrote Home Sweet Home Alone for Disney+ in 2021; they also have a live-action Inspector Gadget project and a Space Camp remake in the works.
