Saturday Night Live was already the most Emmy-nominated show in television history. As of this morning, it has made the record a little more ridiculous.
The NBC sketch institution picked up 11 nominations for the 78th Emmy Awards on Wednesday, pushing its all-time total to 359 nominations. Its 98 Emmy wins remain the most in television history, with this year’s winners still to be decided in September.
The latest haul covers the usual SNL spread: big-picture recognition for Outstanding Variety Series, craft nods for lighting, hairstyling, makeup, production design, technical direction and music direction, plus nominations for directing and two separate picture-editing entries.
One of the morning’s splashier nominations went to Connor Storrie, who landed in Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series for his first turn hosting the show. Storrie’s nod gives SNL another acting nomination for a guest host—a category the show has long used as an Emmy calling card.
Lorne Michaels also extended his own record. The SNL creator and executive producer entered the morning with 112 Emmy nominations, already the most ever for an individual. The show’s nomination for Outstanding Variety Series brings that total to 113. Michaels has won 24 Emmys to date.
Among the specific SNL episodes recognized this year: the Bad Bunny episode for makeup; the Jack Black episode for both production design and music direction; the Olivia Rodrigo episode for directing and technical direction/camerawork; the Ariana Grande episode for lighting; and the filmed segments “MAHAspital (The New Pitt)” and “Home Alone” for picture editing.
The 78th Emmy Awards will air September 14 on NBC and Peacock, with the Creative Arts Emmys set for September 5 and 6.
So challenging competing against a handful of other shows.
It’s like the old NHL when there were only 6 teams and the Canadians racked up so many Stanley cups.
Yeah, a little misleading.
