SNL Debuts Its Matt Gaetz, RFK Jr. in Oval Office-Set Cold Open

The 2024 presidential election may be over, but Donald Trump’s increasingly baffling cabinet selections are giving Saturday Night Live plenty of fodder for comedy—and character debuts.

As we reported earlier in the day, the latest cold open tackled Trump (James Austin Johnson) and Joe Biden’s (Dana Carvey) seemingly civil Oval Office meeting from earlier this week. While bonding over their shared disdain for the job of president, we were introduced to two new impressions: Sarah Sherman as Matt Gaetz and Alec Baldwin as Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.

While Biden attempted to share some words of wisdom with Trump, the president-elect assured the current POTUS that “I already know how to do president. It’s all about surrounding yourself with the best people, and I am very fastly picking the most epic cabinet of all time. They’re some of the most dynamic, free-thinking, animal-killing, sexually criminal, medically crazy people in the country.”

After describing Elon Musk and Matt Gaetz as “an Alien vs. Predator” situation then marveling at how Kristi Noem and RFK Jr. are “killing the dogs, they’re killing the bears,” the tête-à-tête was interrupted by Gaetz himself. Though there was speculation that Gaetz would be played by either Colin Jost or SNL alum Pete Davidson, it was a barely recognizable Sherman who landed the gig.

Gaetz was there simply to thank Trump for nominating him for Attorney General, and assured the president-elect that “if anyone tries to break the law, I’ll tell them what I told my eyebrows: Freeze.”

The bigger surprise came when Baldwin appeared as RFK, Jr. Kennedy, too, was stopping by to express his thanks to Trump for nominating him as head of Health and Human Services. “Americans need someone to teach them to be healthy,” said Baldwin’s RFK Jr. “Someone like me: a 70-year-old man with movie star looks and a worm in his brain.”

Baldwin, of course, holds the record for number of times hosting SNL with a whopping 17 appearances. But he has also made dozens of cameos on the show over the past 20 years, including playing Trump from 2016 to 2020 and—just a few weeks back—appearing as Fox News anchor Bret Baier.

With Trump planning on keeping both Gaetz and RFK Jr. by his side when he takes office again in 2025, it’s safe to say this probably isn’t the last we’ve seen of Sherman’s Gaetz or Baldwin’s Kennedy.
