Saturday Night Live skipped the headlines and went straight for the laughs this week, opening with the return of fan-favorite character Domingo.
The new sketch reunited one-time newlyweds Matt and Kelsey (Andrew Dismukes and Chloe Fineman) with Kelsey’s best friends for Matt’s 30th birthday celebration. Things began innocently enough, with Matt giving a heartfelt toast about “everything going on in the world, government shutdowns, AI, just so much uncertainty,” before adding that “the fact my beautiful wife put this all together for me means a lot.”
But the moment of sincerity didn’t last long. Kelsey’s friends quickly hijacked the party with a musical recap of their “girls’ trip” to find Matt’s perfect present—a trip that, it turned out, was less about gift shopping and more about Kelsey’s rekindled connection with her old flame, Domingo.
“While we went out, Kels sat alone in the hotel,” they sang, “and said I don’t really feel well… We checked in with the front desk, they said she left in a bikini about four hours ago… one night with Domingo!”
Enter Marcello Hernandez, reprising his breakout role as the smooth-talking Latin lover who can’t quite stay out of Kelsey’s life, declaring, “Kelsey, the night we spent together in Nashville was anything but ordinary.” He then launched into a full musical number—set to the tune of Alex Warren’s “Ordinary”—promising that while Kelsey “took a vow,” he was “so well-endowed.”
Matt’s frustration built as Domingo crooned about the “noise complaint” they caused in their hotel room before Kelsey tried, and failed, to calm him down. “Babe, it won’t happen again,” she insisted, seconds before Domingo and the Kelsquad belted the show’s iconic opener, “Live from New York, it’s Saturday night!”
The new sketch marked Domingo’s fourth appearance on the show—and the first time SNL has opened with an non-political sketch since last year’s Christmas episode hosted by Martin Short, which featured the show’s latest installment of The Five-Timers Club.
The first Domingo sketch, written by Jimmy Fowlie and Ceara O’Sullivan, aired a year ago this week. It became an overnight sensation, amassing more than 150 million views across NBC’s social platforms in its first two weeks.
With everything going on in this country, SNL forgoes a political opening skit? Weak. Is NBC afraid??
They helped create a monster that they can’t control!
