Sidekick Sidelined: Guillermo In Wheelchair After Suffering Broken Ankle

Jimmy Kimmel’s sidekick has been placed on JKL’s IL (the Jimmy Kimmel Live! injured list).

Guillermo Rodriguez managed to carry out his sidekick duties last night despite sporting a newly broken ankle.

Before launching into his monologue last night, Kimmel gave Rodriguez the floor to explain why he was posted up in a wheelchair—and the answer had nothing to do with his nightly security duties for JKL

Rodriguez, as it turns out, had been playing basketball at the gym last weekend when it happened—a fact in itself that drew faux shock from Kimmel.

“Be honest,” Kimmel said. “Did you really break it playing basketball, or were you watching basketball and tripped over a bottle of tequila this week?”

Rodriguez explained he had jumped for the ball and landed on his opponent’s foot, bending his own ankle to the breaking point.

Kimmel offered Rodriguez some advice after his sidekick recounted the harrowing incident. “There comes a time in every man’s life when he has to accept that he is too old to play basketball,” said Kimmel, “and for you that was like 18 years ago.”

“I’m just worried how this could affect your job sitting there and not paying attention to anything I say,” Kimmel jabbed.

Given the daily grind, it’s not uncommon for late-night personalities to take to the airwaves with injuries or illnesses—if not injure themselves while on air.

Rodriguez didn’t say how long his recovery is expected to take, but if Kimmel has his way, Rodriguez won’t be setting foot on a basketball court again. As the host told his sidekick last night: “You should stick to rims that have salt around them.”
