Mike Myers‘ Shrek franchise continues to be a very good friend to Saturday Night Live stars past and present.
DreamWorks Animation announced on Thursday morning that current SNL standout Marcello Hernández has boarded the voice cast of Shrek 5, which is due to hit theaters in June 2027.
The DreamWorks announcement came via a social media post (see below) that purports to chronicle a text-message exchange between Hernández and Skyler Gisondo (aka Superman‘s Jimmy Olsen), as they revel over the news that they will respectively play Shrek and Fiona’s (Cameron Diaz) sons, Fergus and Farkle.
Hernández, as you will see, was a bit “extra” with his own announcement approach, whereas Gisondo simply opted for a Shrek hat.
Directed by franchise vets Conrad Vernon and Walt Dohrn, Shrek 5 brings back Myers and Diaz, as well as SNL icon Eddie Murphy as Donkey. Zendaya was previously announced to voice Shrek and Fiona’s daughter, Felicia.
Hernandez and Shrek front man Myers have crossed paths on SNL multiple times this year alone, including in a May sketch set on an elevator and a Trump-themed, March cold open in which they played Marco Rubio and Elon Musk.
It was just over a year ago that SNL featured a sketch involving Broadway’s Shrek: The Musical. In Season 49, a Please Don’t Destroy digital short revolved around host Bad Bunny pitching the boys a Shrek sketch (if not a whole movie!), and in Season 43, host Sterling K. Brown played a dinner party guest who had very strong feelings about Shrek being the best animated film ever.
If they needed an ogre to yell really loud in a Latino accent, they’ve got the right guy.
Maybe he’ll say some funny things. Because he doesn’t on SNL.
