Saturday Night, the upcoming Saturday Night Live biopic, is reportedly headed to Lorne Michaels’ homeland for its premiere.
World of Reel reports that Jason Reitman’s new “thriller-comedy” (his description) is set to screen at the Toronto International Film Festival next month.
The festival, a noted destination for studios premiering films just ahead of the awards season, could be the first to screen Saturday Night. However, World of Reel notes the film has also garnered interest from the Telluride Film Festival, which runs over Labor Day weekend, and doesn’t announce what’s playing until the festival arrives.
Toronto, of course, would be a fitting place for Saturday Night to debut, as its the hometown of Michaels—the main mind behind SNL. (Reitman, meanwhile, was born in Montreal.)
Saturday Night will arrive in theaters on October 11, which is the 49th anniversary of SNL‘s television debut. The film documents the chaotic 90 minutes that led up to that premiere episode, and depicts it all in real-time.
In recent days, we’ve learned more about the much-anticipated movie formerly known as SNL 1975, including first looks at the cast and info on the meticulous research that went into writing the film. Just yesterday, the first trailer and key art were released for the film.
Reitman—who has earned four Oscar nominations over his career, and is the son of the late Ghostbusters director Ivan Reitman—directed the film and co-wrote it with Gil Kenan. Kenan was his collaborator on the two most recent Ghostbusters installments, Ghostbusters: Afterlife (2021) and Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire (2024).
The 49th annual Toronto International Film Festival runs September 5 through September 15.
