First on LateNighter: Longtime Daily Show writer-turned-correspondent Josh Johnson made a splash in his hosting debut Tuesday, outdrawing each of the show’s other rotating hosts—and Jon Stewart—among viewers in the coveted 18–49 demo.
Per Nielsen live-plus-same-day data, Johnson’s first night behind the Daily Show desk drew 590,000 total viewers, making it the most-watched non-Stewart-hosted episode of the year by total audience. But the real story was in the demo, where Johnson pulled in 226,000 viewers aged 18–49, surpassing even Stewart’s top-rated episodes in the advertiser-coveted category.
Further, Johnson’s Daily Show outranked each of the late-night shows we track among younger viewers Tuesday night. It’s also the best demo performance for The Daily Show since September 10, 2024, when Stewart anchored a live post-debate episode following the Trump–Harris showdown.
Expect Johnson’s numbers to climb even higher once delayed-viewing data is factored in over the coming days and weeks.
Johnson, who joined The Daily Show writing staff in 2017 and became an on-air correspondent in 2024, has been steadily building momentum off-camera and online. In addition to his sold-out national stand-up tour, Johnson has cultivated a digital following of over 4 million fans. His weekly Tuesday night YouTube sets—smart, winding comedic narratives stitched from news headlines—routinely rack up millions of views and have become required viewing for fans of sharp, story-driven satire.
As LateNighter’s Bill Carter noted in April, Johnson’s turn at the anchor desk seemed overdue. It appears viewers agree. Since Stewart’s return to The Daily Show in 2024 as Monday night anchor, the show has rotated mid-week hosts from within its correspondent bench, including Ronny Chieng, Jordan Klepper, Michael Kosta, and Desi Lydic. Johnson is the latest addition to that trusted group.
“It’s my first time hosting anything on TV. Ever,” Johnson shared on Instagram the morning of his debut. “I’ve spent years writing behind the scenes, learning from truly great and talented people. Now, for three nights, I get to sit at the desk and do it myself.”
Johnson’s guest Tuesday night was Rob Franklin, author of the novel Great Black Hope.

Josh Johnson, hold on, I need to find my glasses. I’m over 70 and will be watching or trying to watch your show. If I miss any, could you have it mailed to me by FEDEX? I think my medical insurance will cover the cost. Age group 18-49, my foot!! I’m glad you were great!!
Althea I’m you with you. I’m 68 and I’ve been tracking his meteoric rise for several years. He was so poised and polished in his debate, a natural talent. I hate to admit it, but he is better than all the rest of them.
Wow.I can’t believe it’s gotten to the point where a television show is excited to get less than 600,000 views for a nationwide television show.
+1
Great Job! Really loving his style. Oh yeah… he’s a success.
black hermaphrodite host first guest writes book called great black hope just give them the country already FFS. was free food and housing not enough to get robbed and murdered? none have a id. I’m not even from here and can see this is stupid. 68 an 70 yo commenters are bots or senile in a nursing home.
KYS if you don’t like it.. AND you can’t give us something that was ours to begin with.. That Columbus gene run strong in you window lickers
stop eating sweet paint chips
I am 74 and I can assure you I am not a bot nor am I senile and in a nursing home. I can also assure you that after reading your comment, you are most definitely a bot or a magat idiot with no critical thinking skills whatsoever. Josh Johnson is a breath of fresh air in this stagnant and horrid landscape brought about by the most vile and repugnant administration America has ever seen.
Learn to punctuate and write properly. You sound like a troglodyte sitting in some basement playing games 24/7.
Be sure to look up all the big words as I am sure you do not understand them.
sure, just like trevor noah or w/e his name is.
the only hope for the left is to lose the wokeness, and cure themselves of tds.
your only hope is to get the coat hanger your mother lodged in your forebrain removed lolol
18-49… that’s nothing. I’m 62 and as soon as I found out Josh was hosting, I was glued to The Daily Show. I’m a member on his channel, and I saw him in person on his tour.
Congratulations Josh, I’m one of the many faithful Tuesday night YouTube channel viewers and you never disappoint.
Josh was awesome on his first show hosting. And his second. (Haven’t watched the third yet, but I’m sure it will be just as funny!)
Please rotate him in on a regular basis!
He’s not that good. His delivery is flat. He has no emotion or inflection in his voice. He looked awkward. And he sounded mechanical as if he was reading. I know he has a big social media presence but that doesn’t mean he can make the transition to host. He has this whole Barney the Dinosaur vibe that comes across as dull and boring. If they make him host then we’ll be watching reruns of South Park at 11pm before you know it.
agreed, it was a little stiff, but he just needs to do it more like the other hosts and he’ll settle in….he did have one joke which got a great response by the audience and that seemed to loosen it up…thing is, that’s where he could have ad-libbed something to show he’s special
‘loosen him up’
He was awesome and on point. Very smooth, I will watch him again.
Congrats, Josh! Much deserved and long overdue! We love you!
good for Josh…I like all the non-Stewart hosts…nobody there I get disappointed with when they host
I’m so happy for Josh! He’s amazing!
It’s so exciting to see him on this late night show. I watch his YouTube channel and he always delivers. He has a way of drawing you into the story, his facial expression, and satirical landing makes you want to see the next reel.
No mention of his podcast. Logan Nielsen (his co-host, friend and fellow comedian) did an announcement on the podcast prior to his debut which i think would have given a large boost . well done 👏
