BTS Brings Big Ratings for Jimmy Fallon—Second Only to Taylor Swift

BTS’ long-awaited return to late night gave Jimmy Fallon a major ratings lift Wednesday, drawing younger viewers in droves to The Tonight Show and its social media channels.

According to Nielsen Live+3 data, 269,000 viewers in the advertiser-coveted demo tuned in for the March 25 broadcast featuring the reunited global supergroup—making it the second-highest-rated regular episode of the season in the demo, a ranking that excludes special telecasts boosted by NFL games or the Winter Olympics opening ceremony.

That places it behind only Taylor Swift’s Oct. 6 appearance, which still stands as Fallon’s top regular episode of the season among younger viewers.

As with Swift’s visit earlier this season, BTS’ biggest impact on The Tonight Show wasn’t in linear ratings. The group’s appearances on the show last week—which included two performances staged at the Guggenheim Museum, a sit-down interview, and a fan surprise segment—have generated outsized online engagement, with more than 50 million views to date across YouTube and TikTok alone.

For Fallon, the performance is the latest example of a well-established playbook: lean into deeply engaged fanbases and meet them where they are. Whether it’s Swifties, the BTS Army, or audiences for pop culture juggernauts like Stranger Things, Heated Rivalry, or Kpop Demon Hunters, Fallon has consistently turned fandom-driven bookings into some of his strongest ratings nights.

While BTS’ appearance generated a significant linear ratings boost for The Tonight Show Wednesday night—both in the demo (up 52% over its season-to-date average) and among total viewers (up 21% to 1.5 million)—the show still came in second in its timeslot to Jimmy Kimmel Live!, which drew an average of 306,000 viewers in the demo and 1.8 million overall.
