Florida Congressman Matt Gaetz made headlines this week when President-elect Donald Trump nominated him to be attorney general, which begs the question: What does that mean for Pete Davidson and Colin Jost?
What do the two Staten Islanders have to do with the controversial Republican? Gaetz—who has faced accusations of child sex trafficking, drug use, sexual abuse, and statutory rape—has been mocked by Saturday Night Live before, and given the latest news, it’s safe to presume he’ll show up again this weekend.
Back in 2021, it was Davidson who got the part. The then-cast member appeared as Gaetz in a cold open that saw him guest on a Britney Spears-hosted talk show. Davidson, who departed SNL in 2022, returned to Saturday Night Live just two weeks ago, appearing alongside host John Mulaney in the “Port Authority Duane Reade” sketch.
But despite Davidson’s one-time portrayal, it’s Jost who would seem to most resemble Gaetz. In fact, the “Weekend Update” co-anchor admitted as much in that very same episode.
Jost kicked off that same episode’s Update by covering the Gaetz allegations, devoting a full minute’s worth of jokes to the subject. (He returned with another run of barbs the following week.)
“[Gaetz] looks like a caricature artist’s drawing of me,” Jost joked while displaying side-by-side images of Gaetz and a caricature of himself.
Jost also took aim at Gaetz—and their shared likeness—during the comic’s stint at this year’s White House Correspondents Dinner. “I actually thought I saw Matt Gaetz here tonight,” he told the crowd, “but it was actually just my own reflection in a spoon.”
The SNL cast member who most resembles Matt Gaetz is neither Pete Davidson nor Colin Jost. It’s Bill Hader.
