Michael Che is forging his own late-night path.
The “Weekend Update” co-anchor is staging a “test episode” of a new late-night show in New York City next week.
Don’t Sleep with Michael Che: A Late Night Talk Show Created by Michael Che will go down at City Winery on Tuesday, August 27 at 10 p.m.
Che announced the venture on Instagram on Wednesday. “Alright. I’ve decided I’m gonna produce my own late night show,” he wrote. “I’m recording a test episode next Tuesday. Get tix and be part of late night history.”
Shortly after tickets for the show went on sale, Che took to Instagram again to share that his original idea was to do a morning show. “Cause everybody on daytime TV are too happy and chipper and energetic. I wanted to do a show for people like me who HATE mornings called Don’t Wanna Wake Up With Michael Che.”
Che’s been scheduling quite a few spur-of-the-moment events lately. Alongside the announcement for Don’t Sleep with Michael Che, Che also revealed he’ll be co-hosting a live standup special on Peacock with Colin Jost on September 12. “We are not getting paid,” Che wrote of the live event. “Just wanted to do it.”
He also announced a series of impromptu shows in London earlier this month.
Che and Jost will first be taking their show to Denver on August 24. Che also has solo standup shows scheduled for September 18 through September 20 in Madison, Wisconsin.
In June, the Saturday Night Live star sparked speculation that he might be departing the sketch show when he posted “I’m a full-time standup comedian again.” (The show’s 50th season premieres September 28. Besides the departures of Punkie Johnson and Molly Kearney, the cast lineup has not yet been announced.)
Che first came to Saturday Night Live in 2013 as a guest writer. After a brief stint as a correspondent on The Daily Show in the summer of 2014, he returned to SNL to co-anchor “Weekend Update” alongside Jost. Che was elevated to co-head writer in 2017 and served in that position for five years.
Tickets for Don’t Sleep with Michael Che are on sale now.
