CBS’ The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and NBC’s The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon split first place on Tuesday in the 11:35 p.m. timeslot.
Per Nielsen live-plus-same-day data, The Late Show averaged the most total viewers among late-night’s post-primetime offerings. Featuring guests Kate Winslet, and Jude Law, the Tuesday, Sept. 24 Late Show averaged 2,078,000 total viewers with 249,000 P18-49. That’s up +11% in total viewers and +44% among P18-49 from the night before (Sept. 23); up +18% and +30%, respectively, from the previous Tuesday’s episode (Sept. 17).
The Tonight Show averaged the most Adults 18-49 at 11:35 p.m., and also substantial audience gains in the hour across demos. Featuring guests Keith Urban, and Margaret Qualley, the Tuesday, Sept. 24 Tonight Show averaged a total of 1,456,000 viewers with 254,000 P18-49. That’s up +13% and +19%, respectively, from the night before. That’s also up +32% and +26%, respectively, from the prior Tuesday’s Tonight Show.
Unlike its timeslot counterparts, ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live! shed viewers from comparable nights. Featuring guests Josh Gad, and Jack Schlossberg, and musical guest Judah & The Lion, the Sept. 24 Kimmel averaged 1,585,000 total viewers with 175,000 P18-49. That’s -33% and -65%, respectively, from the night before (when the program received a Monday Night Football boost); -18% and -18%, respectively, from the previous Tuesday.
Moving ahead, NBC’s Late Night with Seth Meyers dominated the 12:35 a.m. timeslot on Tuesday, out-performing its ABC and CBS competition both in total viewers (906,000) and among P18-49 (139,000). Meyers’ Sept. 24 episode, featuring guests Will Ferrell, Harper Steele, and Kristen Bell, gained +1% in total viewers and +5% among P18-49 from the night before; +14% but -8%, respectively, from the previous Tuesday’s episode.
Similar to its lead-in, CBS’ After Midnight fared well on Tuesday in the ratings department. The Sept. 24 episode averaged 713,000 total viewers with 119,000 P18-49, up +27% and +21%, respectively, from the night before. The Sept. 24 After Midnight is also up +16% and +28%, respectively, from the previous Tuesday’s episode. Affion Crockett, Jade Catta-Preta, and Laura Peek appeared on the Taylor Tomlinson-led program.
Following Kimmel, ABC’s late night half-hour news program Nightline averaged 812,000 total viewers with 108,000 P18-49 at 12:35 a.m. That’s -38% in total viewers and -64% among P18-49 from the night before; -12% but +24%, respectively, from the previous Tuesday’s episode.
Lastly, guest-hosted by Desi Lydic, Tuesday’s episode of The Daily Show averaged 464,000 total viewers with 123,000 P18-49, per Nielsen live-plus-same-day data. That’s down -32% in total viewers but up +8% from the night before (hosted by Jon Stewart). It’s also up +4% and +19%, respectively, from the previous Tuesday’s Daily Show (guest-hosted by Jordan Klepper). Aubrey Plaza was Lydic’s guest on the program.
