With NBC’s late night programming once again preempted for Olympics programming, ABC and CBS once again went head to head on Monday, August 5.
As was the case last week, both networks are airing reruns of their respective late-night shows until the Olympics are over, with The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and Jimmy Kimmel Live! splitting first place at 11:35 p.m.
CBS aired The Late Show‘s July 18, 2024 episode this past Monday, and the telecast averaged 1,100,000 total viewers with 139,000 P18-49, per Nielsen live-plus-same-day data. That’s +4% and +25%, respectively, compared to the Monday prior (July 29).
At the same time, ABC aired a repeat of Jimmy Kimmel Live!‘s July 16, 2024 episode, and that telecast averaged 932,000 total viewers with 144,000 P18-49, per Nielsen live-plus-same-day data. That’s +6% and a solid +60%, respectively, from the Monday prior (another rebroadcast).
Following The Late Show, CBS aired a repeat of After Midnight‘s June 4, 2024 episode, and that telecast averaged 440,000 total viewers with 91,000 P18-49, per Nielsen live-plus-same-day data. That’s +13% and +26%, respectively, from the Monday prior (another rebroadcast).
Following Kimmel, ABC aired a new episode of Nightline, and the 12:35 a.m. program averaged 597,000 total viewers with 112,000 P18-49, per Nielsen live-plus-same-day data. That’s +3% and %+78, respectively, from the previous Monday’s episode.
All in all, solid week-to-week viewer gains for ABC’s and CBS’ late night shows.
With Jon Stewart currently sidelined due to Covid-19, Michael Kosta stepped into the Monday Daily Show host role earlier this week. With Kosta in the host’s chair, TDS‘ August 5 episode averaged 709,000 total viewers with 125,000 P18-49 at 11 p.m., per Nielsen live-plus-same-day data. That’s -9% and -31%, respectively, from the prior Monday episode (a highly-rated telecast hosted by Stewart and featuring Pete Buttigieg); but a far larger audience than what Kosta traditionally draws when hosting mid-week. Kosta welcomed author/professor/social commentator Roxane Gay to the program this past Monday.
