Jon Stewart responded to Jimmy Kimmel’s suspension Thursday nght by transforming The Daily Show into “the government-approved Daily Show,” complete with soaring patriotic music, an announcer hailing him as a “patriotically obedient host,” and the show’s trademark blue hue repainted in gleaming Trump gold.
“We have another fun, hilarious, administration-compliant show,” Stewart announced at the top of the show, before begging his audience not to react too freely. From there, he launched into exaggerated praise of President Trump’s recent trip to England, describing his “majestic gait” and “undeniable sexual charisma,” before pivoting to Kimmel.
Stewart stuck to the bit throughout his 23-minite monologue, claiming that the president keeps a “talent-ometer” on his desk to measure performers’ “Talent Quotient,” and that when it dips, the FCC pressures networks to remove them. “Read your Constitution. Read it!” he shouted, presenting Kimmel’s suspension as a patriotic obligation.
He then mocked the double standards around “free speech,” showing clips of right-wing commentators calling Democrats fascists and animals while insisting that entertainers like Kimmel must face “repercussions.” He sarcastically affirmed their false claims as “all true,” redefining January 6 rioters as “sightseers” because “anything you see is a sight.”
The segment ended with Stewart and his correspondents performing a grandiose anthem to Trump: “Oh, Donald, we pledge to thee our world… You have a massive penis, much bigger than normal.” It was part pageant, part protest, and a sharp reminder of what a truly “safe” late-night show would look like—and how ridiculous that would be.
Stewart, who usually hosts on Mondays, was brought in for a rare Thursday night show to respond to the Kimmel news. He joins a chorus of late-night hosts from Fallon and Meyers to Colbert who showed their support for Kimmel on their shows in different ways.
