Jon Hamm Gives Backstage Drama New Meaning in SNL Promo

Saturday Night Live is channeling a retro backstage soap opera in its first promo for this week’s new episode with host Jon Hamm.

“This week on… Saturday Night Live,” announces a voiceover by James Austin Johnson, “with special guest: Jon Hamm.” In this case, Hamm is a doctor, whipping away a medical file to reveal his face in dramatic fashion before he breaks bad news to Chloe Fineman.

That news: Sarah Sherman has bombed.

“Clear a path!” Bowen Yang shouts as he wheels Sherman out of Studio 8H on a stretcher. “We have to get her to the afterparty STAT.”

“I thought my farting grandpa would kill,” Sherman coughs out before dying. (Sherman is no stranger to soaps, appearing in a two-episode arc last year on General Hospital.)

The promo’s plot only thickens from there, with a cavalcade of slaps and pregnancy reveals. (Giving Sherman an opportunity to implicate Colin Jost in a love affair.)

The promo promises “drama,” “romance,” and “those classic Saturday Night Live twists you’ll never see coming.” One of those twists? Jon Hamm’s evil twin, Alphonse.

The clip wraps up with the title: The Saturday Nights of Our Lives.

Though he enjoys a close relationship with the show, Jon Hamm hasn’t hosted SNL since 2011. He’ll be joined on the show this weekend by musical guest Lizzo, who hosted the show herself in 2022.
