John Mulaney to Helm Robby Hoffman’s Debut Netflix Special

They first met this past May when she guested on Everybody’s Live, but John Mulaney and Robby Hoffman are reuniting—this time with Mulaney stepping behind the camera to direct Hoffman’s upcoming Netflix stand-up special.

The special, set to film next week in Los Angeles at The Masonic Lodge at Hollywood Forever Cemetery, will mark Hoffman’s first comedy special in nearly seven years and her debut for the streamer.

Hoffman’s previous special, Robby Hoffman: I’m Nervous, was taped during a Just For Laughs performance in Montreal, and premiered on Canadian platform Crave in 2019.

Mulaney announced the new collaboration Sunday during the San Diego stop of his “Mister Whatever” tour, surprising the audience by bringing Hoffman onstage. “She’s one of my absolute favorite comedians and friends alive,” he told the crowd while introducing her. (“You two are couples goals,” Mulaney’s wife, Olivia Munn, commented on a video of the moment.)

The next day, Mulaney confirmed the news on Instagram, writing “I’m very excited to announce I’ll be directing Robby Hoffman’s new Netflix special.” He also recounted how Hoffman’s outdoor set Sunday night was briefly interrupted by her own car alarm.

This will be Mulaney’s second time directing a stand-up special for Netflix. In 2024, he helmed Langston Kerman’s Bad Poetry, following their work together on Mulaney’s initial late-night experiment, Everybody’s in LA.

Though Mulaney and Hoffman hadn’t met before her appearance on Everybody’s Live this past May, Mulaney told viewers he’d “been a fan of hers for so long.”

Beyond her connection to Mulaney, Hoffman’s late-night credits also include writing for The Chris Gethard Show and appearing on After Midnight. (Following Gethard’s series finale, she fronted a one-off spinoff, The Chris Gethard Show with Robby Hoffman.) She also earned an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Guest Actress for her recurring role as Randi on the late-night–themed fourth season of Hacks.

In April, Deadline reported that Hoffman had a comedy series in development at HBO titled Unentitled, which she’s set to co-write, executive produce, and star in. She’ll also appear in a regular role on Steve Carell’s untitled HBO comedy from Bill Lawrence and Matt Tarses.

Mulaney remains one of Netflix’s most prolific comedy partners, between his talk series, three solo specials, and projects including Oh, Hello on Broadway and John Mulaney & the Sack Lunch Bunch.

Netflix has not yet announced a release date for Hoffman’s new special.
