Jimmy Kimmel Live! is taking a stance against Trump’s SNAP benefit cuts with more than just words this week, springing into action with the launch of a food bank.
Jimmy Kimmel and show have opened a food donation center in Los Angeles, bestowing the effort with a Trump-inspired name: “The Jimmy Kimmel Live Big, Beautiful Food Bank.”
The move comes after Donald Trump announced that his administration would be freezing Supplemental Nutrition Assistant Program (SNAP) benefits until the government shutdown ends, despite over 40 million Americans relying on the program. Following a court order, the administration backtracked to partially funding the program enough to keep it halfway active.
“Cutting SNAP benefits creates uncertainty for American children, seniors and families,” Kimmel’s show stated in a press release. “To support our community members in need, we’re starting a donation center in our Hollywood backlot.”
Donations taken at Kimmel’s Big, Beautiful Food Bank will go to two different area nonprofits: the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank and St. Joseph Center. Per the show’s announcement, the most needed foods include low-sodium soups, chili, and stews; low-sugar cereals; tuna, chicken, and salmon; protein bars, pasta, and rice. The center is also accepting personal care items like wipes, diapers, deodorant, soap, oral hygiene, and feminine products.
The food bank is staged next door to Kimmel’s El Capitan studio, on the grounds where the show’s outdoor performance stage for the JKL concert series stands.
Jimmy Kimmel Live! ended its call for donations with a plea to those not in the immediate Los Angeles area: “If you are not [in LA], please consider supporting your local food banks.”
On Monday, Kimmel’s monologue addressed the SNAP controversy, including comments the president made on Truth Social and his decision to throw a lavish Great Gatsby-themed Halloween bash at Mar-a-Lago amidst the impending SNAP freeze. “Throwing a party at your private golf club where the theme is rich white people, hours before millions of Americans are set to lose their food assistance might be the Trumpiest trump move of all time,” said Kimmel.
JKL launched a similar donation initiative earlier this year amidst the devastating wildfires in Los Angeles, launching a donation center in the same location for bottled water, baby food, pet food, toiletries, and other essential items for those in need.
