Jimmy Fallon Serenades Stephen Colbert in Late Show Interview Debut

As part of his first-ever bona fide visit to CBS’ The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Fallon sang a veritable swan song for his peer exiting the late night fray in May.

More than a decade into its run, Stephen Colbert‘s Late Show had never had Fallon in for an actual sit-down interview. That changed on Thursday evening when the host of NBC’s The Tonight Show taped his own show early, then darted down the street to spend quality time with Colbert—less than three months ahead of The Late Show‘s involuntary series finale.

To be clear, Fallon had appeared on Colbert’s Late Show three times before—including in no less than its September 2015 premiere—but never as a guest.

Colbert in turn has guested on Fallon’s Tonight Show twice—in person (in March 2014), and in a June 2018 “video chat.” Additionally, Colbert popped up twice remotely, first with Conan O’Brien in 2018 (as part of Fallon’s monologue), and in 2019 to perform a duet of “The NeverEnding Story” with Fallon à la Stranger Things 3.

Kicking off his milestone visit, Fallon was the latest celebrity to take part in “Rescue Dog Rescue,” a Late Show segment that aims to find forever homes for adorable adoptable doggos from North Shore Animal League.

Following that bit, Fallon spent some time in the official guest chair. There, the two late-night vets took a fun walk down memory lane, revisiting their friendly Ben & Jerry’s flavors rivalry, the pandemic-era “Strike Force Five,” and more. Fallon also gifted Colbert with a painting he had made from a photo of Colbert on a boat with his dog Benny.

Colbert then “nudged” Fallon into doing some singing—and the multitalented Tonight Show host happily obliged by launching into a modified version of Frank Sinatra and Paul Anka’s “My Way,” complete with nods to The Colbert Report, President Trump wanting Colbert off the air, and Colbert’s possible future on Dancing With the Stars.

“You did it yourrrr wayyyy,” Fallon crooned, winding up standing on the desk alongside Colbert by the end of the standard.
