Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker wasted no time joining in on Jimmy Kimmel’s new #ShowMeYourHellhole social media challenge—body armor and all.
In a video that aired on Thursday night’s Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Pritzker appeared in downtown Chicago dressed as a TV reporter “on the ground” in what he described as “war-torn Chicago.”
“This is JB Pritzker, reporting from war-torn Chicago. As you can see, there’s utter mayhem and chaos on the ground. It’s quite disturbing,” he said while standing on a downtown bridge. “The Milwaukee Brewers have come in to attack our Chicago Cubs.”
He went on to joke that Chicagoans were being “forced to eat hot dogs with ketchup” and that “our deep-dish pizza has gone shallow.” Pritzker closed his faux report with, “It’s a challenge to survive here in the city of Chicago, but there’s no hellscape that I’d rather be in.”

Pritzker taped the bit Thursday afternoon as proceedings were underway at the Dirksen Federal Courthouse, where Illinois and the city of Chicago were suing to block the Trump administration’s plan to deploy the National Guard. Later that day, U.S. District Judge April Perry temporarily halted the deployment order for two weeks.
According to a Chicago Sun-Times report, onlookers gathered as the governor taped the bit—including a former Illinois National Guard member, to whom Pritzker said, “Well, I’m glad you’re not getting deployed now.” The man replied, “Yeah. Here or anywhere.”
Kimmel kicked off his #ShowMeYourHellhole campaign Wednesday night in response to President Donald Trump referring to cities like Portland and Chicago as “hellholes.” Since the start of his second presidency, Trump has sent or discussed sending federalized National Guard troops to 11 Democratic-led cities. The ABC host asked viewers to post videos showing how peaceful these so-called war zones really are.
Dozens of videos have been posted on YouTube and Instagram over the last 36 hours, several of which Kimmel aired Thursday night alongside Pritzker’s.
Pritzker’s appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! last night extends a pattern for the governor, who’s logged two other late-night appearances so far this year. He last visited Kimmel in May following a headline-grabbing political speech in New Hampshire that stirred 2028 buzz, while he appeared on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert in August.
Preliminary crime statistics from this past weekend show 22 shootings in Chicago in a three-day span, resulting in 29 victims and four murder cases, according to the city’s police department.
The victims include a 16-year-old with a gunshot wound to the hand who told police he had been the victim of a drive-by involving a black SUV, a 62-year-old man and 23-year-old woman who were both shot in the legs while sitting in a garage, and a 33-year-old man shot twice in the chest by an unidentified male after an argument. He died from his injuries.
Jimmy Kimmel: “That’s hilarious, especially the kid getting shot. Reminds me of when I did black-face and killed a Latina woman in the sketch.”
