Heidi Gardner Admits to ‘Sketch Fatigue,’ Talks Post-SNL Plans

Now in her eighth season on Saturday Night Live, Heidi Gardner says sketch ideas don’t always come to her as readily as they once did, and has begun considering what might be next for her.

Though she stopped short of suggesting she has any imminent plans to leave the legendary sketch show, in a new interview with Craig Ferguson Gardner shared her thoughts on how she’d like to when her time on SNL is up.

“I know whatever I do next… I’d love to have a show that I co-star in and co-write, and it’s a character and it’s a world,” she revealed. “And it’s a character I get to live in for a while and explore more.”

Such a project would follow in the footsteps of other SNL players who went on to launch their own television series. Shows like Tina Fey’s 30 Rock, Aidy Bryant’s Shrill, and Kenan Thompson’s Kenan even remained in partnership with Lorne Michaels through his Broadway Video production company.

Asked by Ferguson if she still enjoys being on the show, Gardner answered with an enthusiastic yes. “Yeah, I do. I love playing characters, so I can’t really imagine a world where I’m gonna get to do this to this degree again,” she explained.

However, she did admit to feeling one effect of her eight-year run.

“I will say the only thing that I’ve started to feel a little bit is just sketch fatigue, or idea fatigue,” she admitted. “At this point, after doing Groundlings and SNL for so long, I’m like, ‘I’ve written a lot of sketches.’”

“It does happen some weeks where I’m like ‘I do not have an idea for a sketch, a game, or a character,’” she added. “Luckily we have amazing writers at the show that will be like, ‘But I have an idea for you.’ That’s the only thing that has gotten a little tough.”
