Less than four weeks after his last visit to The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Jon Batiste is back again tonight, Monday January 6, with a new performance.
The Grammy and Oscar winning former Late Show bandleader is billed as Colbert’s musical guest for the show’s first episode back after its two-week holiday break. Batiste’s performance was presumably recorded during his December 11 visit to the show, as The Late Show tends to record extra material to air in later weeks. (Batiste sat for an interview during that appearance.)
In November, Batiste released Beethoven Blues: Batiste Piano Series, Vol. 1, a solo piano record featuring original compositions and new renditions of Ludwig van Beethoven songs.
Batiste fronted Colbert’s house band—then called Stay Human—and served as musical director from the show’s 2015 premiere. He left the show to pursue other endeavors in August 2022. Batiste was replaced by Stay Human band member Louis Cato, who continues to lead the now-renamed Late Show Band.
The Late Show will also welcome former U.S. Rep. Adam Kinzinger tonight. The former Republican Congressman from Illinois is the focus of a new documentary The Last Republican, which “follow[s] his efforts to hold Donald Trump accountable.”
