David Letterman’s Next Guest is Now Doug Emhoff (for a Political Fundraiser in Martha’s Vineyard)

David Letterman’s next guest might need a little bit more of an introduction than Joe Biden.

Among the many questions left in the wake of Biden dropping out of the 2024 presidential race on Sunday: How would it affect Letterman’s schedule?

Though it was admittedly far down the list of concerns, it was a curious issue nonetheless. Just three days before Biden’s withdrawal, it was announced that Letterman would headline a fundraiser for President Biden on Martha’s Vineyard later this month. At the time, the announcement was seen as a sign that the Biden campaign was ready to keep pushing forward, even amidst a growing chorus of calls from top-ranking Democrats (and celebrities like George Clooney) for him to step aside following his disastrous debate with Trump.

The fate of the event, which was scheduled to have both Joe and Jill Biden in attendance (as well as Hawaii Governor Josh Green), was unclear following this weekend’s shocking news.

Now it has been confirmed: The show will go on, with Letterman still appearing—but now he’ll be sharing the stage with Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff. As the husband of Kamala Harris, Emhoff became the United States’ first Second Gentlemen in 2020, and will become the first First Gentleman if Harris wins the presidency.

While Emhoff hasn’t sat for an interview with Letterman before, he has been a guest on the late-night franchise the host created. In May, Emhoff guested on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, where he discussed the experience of being the first-ever Second Gentlemen.

Late-night stars hosting Democratic fundraisers has been a normal occurrence this election cycle. In March, Colbert hosted a fundraiser with Biden and former Presidents Bill Clinton and Barack Obama that raised a record $26 million. In May, Jimmy Kimmel hosted a fundraiser for the then-nominee in Los Angeles.

The fundraiser with Letterman will take place in Vineyard Haven on July 29. To attend, donations in the range of $2,500 to $25,000 must be made.
