Apparently Jon Stewart isn’t the only Daily Show alum who can make his own schedule. Actress Olivia Munn stepped back into her role as a correspondent last night after a 14-year absence.
The guest appearance was a one-off for Munn, who was already appearing as the interview guest on last night’s program, hosted by Desi Lydic. She’s currently promoting the Apple TV+ series Your Friends and Neighbors, but as TDS’ former “Senior Asian Correspondent,” the appearance coincided with the chance to tackle one of the news cycle’s most dominant stories this week: Trump’s tariffs on China.
“I just wish that someone could explain what the strategy is going forward with these tariffs,” Lydic lamented during her monologue last night.
“I can tell you,” Munn answered from offscreen.
“I’m a correspondent on The Daily Show,” Munn explained. “You know how Jon comes in one day a week? I have the same deal, [but] I come in once every 14 years. My dad’s a cicada.”
Munn debuted as part of The Daily Show’s “Best F#@king News Team Ever” back in 2010 under host Jon Stewart (whom she later helped honor when Stewart received the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor in 2022). She departed the show in September 2011. While Munn went on to guest twice on TDS during its Trevor Noah-hosted era, she hadn’t stepped back into a correspondent role until now.
So when might viewers see another return visit from Munn? If you ask her, not for another fourteen years. “I’ll see you in 2039,” she told Lydic as she slinked off camera.
Munn did return minutes later to sit for her interview with Lydic, which she kicked off by reminiscing about the honor of being hired by TDS.
“Do you like that we invite you to come on as a guest, and then we immediately put you to work?” Lydic asked.
“I love it,” Munn assured her.
