The Tonight Show has added a new staff writer to its ranks—and she’s already making an impression.
Comedian Rose Kelso joined The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon as a staff writer this week, landing an on-air appearance on her very first day when she interrupted Jimmy Fallon’s Monday monologue for a scripted exchange about Jacob Elordi’s portrayal of Frankenstein’s monster in Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein.
“Some people are saying that the monster played by Jacob Elordi is too hot,” Fallon began.
“You said it, Jimmy!” Kelso interrupted from the audience. “I’d love to come down and rap about it.” As The Roots kicked in with a beat, Kelso joined Fallon on the studio floor to rap about the attractiveness of modern movie monsters—from Nosferatu to It.
“I didn’t know who that was,” Fallon joked to Steve Higgins after the bit. “People are just rapping out of the audience.”
Kelso was back on air for a second consecutive show Tuesday night, appearing in comedian Mack Hubbell’s correspondent debut, and again Wednesday—this time as one half the fictional country music duo “Guthrie and Maria” in a bit riffing on AI-written lyrics.
Kelso announced her hiring on Instagram, revealing she’s serving as a sketch writer for Fallon’s show.
Monday’s rap wasn’t Kelso’s first time on The Tonight Show. Last year she competed in—and won—an installment of the show’s recurring segment Battle of the Instant Songwriters.
Before joining The Tonight Show, Kelso created several series for Comedy Central’s digital channels, including Boomer Stoop and Rose and Brooks’ Small World. The latter pairs her with fellow Tonight Show staff writer Brooks Allison with whom she co-starred in Wednesday night’s “Guthrie and Maria” monologue bit. She’s also built large followings on TikTok and Instagram, where her comedic and musical shorts often nd draw millions of views.
