The Late Show With Stephen Colbert is playing musical news anchors with tonight’s post-election show.
Although ABC’s George Stephanopoulos had been scheduled to guest with Colbert tonight, the show announced this afternoon that CBS anchor John Dickerson will appear instead.
At press time the reasons for switch weren’t clear, but we can only assume that Stephanopoulos was needed at his day job.
Stephanopoulos, the co-anchor of Good Morning America and host of This Week with George Stephanopoulos, has appeared on Colbert’s Late Show twice—October of 2022, and in May of this year.
Dickerson, who anchors The Daily Report with John Dickerson and serves as chief political analyst for CBS News, has logged at least 17 appearances with Colbert, most recently after the Trump-Harris debate in September.
All eyes will be on Colbert and his late-night cohorts tonight to see their reactions to Donald Trump‘s decisive win against Kamala Harris. Colbert, Jimmy Kimmel, and Seth Meyers have been outspoken critics of the former president, with Colbert and Kimmel even going so far as to participate in political fundraisers for Joe Biden away from their shows.
Although each of the network late-night shows were pre-empted Tuesday night by election results coverage, Comedy Central’s The Daily Show aired a live election special that saw Jon Stewart at the anchor desk as the inevitability of Trump’s win took hold. The grim episode was reminiscent of Colbert’s 2016 election special, which aired live on Showtime as it became clear that Hillary Clinton had been defeated by Trump in that election.
