Another of Saturday Night Live‘s key Season 50 sponsors is making the most of its cozy relationship with the legendary sketch show, releasing a new SNL-produced commercial that pairs two of the show’s cast members in a hair metal supergroup.
A new one-minute ad for skincare company CeraVe sees Sarah Sherman and Bowen Yang as members of garage band Naumore Dandruf, who encounter a hair-raising problem: excess dandruff covering their equipment as they try to rock out.
“We’ve got a big gig coming out and we keep getting ‘druff on our stuff,” Yang complains.
Another bandmate comes to their aid, as their drummer is revealed to be (actual) dermatologist and CeraVe partner Dr. Dustin Portella.
“Guys, enough!” he shouts to the SNLers. “No need to get in a scruff about ‘druff, because I’ve got CeraVe’s new Anti-Dandruff.”
After Portella whips out a bottle of the shampoo, Yang is inspired to lead the group in a headbanging ballad to the product.
Beyond appearing in the commercial, Sherman and Yang have also implied more personal ties to the concept of skincare. “We had so much fun filming this and legit as a dandruff-haver, I love CeraVe’s new shampoo and conditioner,” Sherman told Rolling Stone.
“Naumore Dandruf ended up being a perfect, elaborate excuse to hang out and laugh with Sarah,” Yang added. “Then Dr. Dustin wrote me a prescription for an ointment I desperately needed.”
CeraVe’s parent company, L’Oréal Groupe, is one of several anchor brands who’ve partnered with Saturday Night Live for the show’s milestone 50th season. Each of the show’s key sponsors have released ads starring cast members past or present in the leadup to the show’s 50th anniversary celebration weekend. Joining the ranks of recent SNL-themed ads for brands like T-Mobile, Capital One, and Allstate, the stars of SNL’s popular recurring sketch “The Californians” just reunited for a new Volkswagen ad.
