Bill Maher Earns First Golden Globe Nod for His Final Stand-Up Special

Bill Maher’s stand-up farewell has nabbed him his first Golden Globe nomination.

Nominees for the 83rd Annual Golden Globe were announced on Monday morning, and Maher’s Is Anyone Else Seeing This? HBO special was nominated for Best Performance in Stand-Up Comedy on Television.

The special, released last January on HBO and HBO Max, marked the 13th stand-up special of Maher’s career—and also his last.

The Real Time host announced in May 2024 that he planned to retire from stand-up comedy at the end of that year. Maher made the announcement on his Club Random podcast during a conversation with Jerry Seinfeld.

“I feel nervous about telling you. I feel like you’re the confessor to this,” Maher told Seinfeld at the time, “but after this year, I’m going to stop doing [standup].”

In November 2024, Maher told Club Random guest Patton Oswalt that he didn’t “want to be out there in this country, in this political atmosphere,”doing stand-up, adding that he was “tired of the travel” and “tired of being twice as funny as people who were selling twice as many tickets as me.”

Just days ahead of Is Anyone Else Seeing This?’s January 2025 release, Maher confirmed his retirement to Club Random guest Jay Leno.

“I’m very comfortable with this decision, honestly,” he told Leno. “All year long… I knew—I didn’t book anything in 2025.”

Maher recorded Is Anyone Else Seeing This? at Chicago’s CIBC Theatre last December as part of his “WTF? Tour.” The hour sees the comic tackle topics like religion, sex, and parenting.

Maher’s Globe nomination puts him up against five other A-list stand-ups for the trophy: Ricky Gervais, Brett Goldstein, Kevin Hart, Kumail Nanjiani, and Sarah Silverman.

The 83rd Annual Golden Globes will air Sunday, January 11, 2026 at 8 PM ET/5PM PT on ABC.

  1. Just a pity nomination for Bunghole Bill Maher says:

It’s Hollywood’s way of telling him “Here’s your nom’, you whiny little bitch! Now go back to licking your lord and master Drumpf’s unwiped ass, you miserable butter faced troll!”

  2. David Whiting says:

I just watched the latest New Rules. Bill Maher has pretty much turned into Greg Gutfeld. I mourn the truth-teller that Maher used to be.

    1. He never was one! says:

He’s always been a toxic narcissist who loves his own words, even though a lot of words he uses are fucking stupid! This is who Bunghole Bill Maher has ALWAYS been, A whinny little bitch!
